The DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID) was founded in 1997 and is a private non-profit organization. This special district, where property owners have agreed to tax themselves to fund services, encompasses a 138-block area of ~526 properties from Massachusetts Ave on the north to Constitution Ave on the south, and from Louisiana Ave on the east to 16th St. on the west. BIDs, typically governed by a board of directors and dedicated staff, provide a combination of capital improvements, resources and research to augment their area and support stakeholders (including safety/hospitality and maintenance ambassadors, homeless services, public space, events, marketing, communications, economic development, and transportation).
